The Society of Professional Journalists and the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication again team up for Building a Better Journalist Oct. 25, 2008. We are pleased to host Steve Engelberg - managing editor of the non-profit, investigative newsroom ProPublica - as this year’s featured speaker. We will also offer a variety of training sessions, including traditional writing courses and others geared toward emerging technologies in the field.
This very affordable conference is subsidized by membership dues and through our annual contest, our biggest fundraiser. Browse a complete schedule below and learn more about our presenters as information is posted. Online registration is also available. Please register early as space in some sessions is limited.
For weary travelers, SPJ will award up to five $100 scholarships to take the sting out of traveling to Eugene for the conference. Scholarships are given to working journalists who travel 100 or more miles and whose employers will not underwrite their travel costs. SPJ membership is preferred, but not required. Travel scholars will also have their admission to the conference waived. To apply, send a letter and informal resume to: SPJ Travel Scholars, care of Oregon-SW Washington SPJ, P.O. Box 8974, Portland, OR 97207. Deadline is Oct 17. Call 503-708-0223 (evenings preferred) for more information.
